Chemdog 91 is the original 1991 Chemdog cut, the plant behind Sour Diesel, and most of what modern cannabis calls “gas.” Lucky Dog Seed Co works from the verified Chemdog 91 cut held by Skunk VA since 1995, unbroken and never renamed. Every seed line and every clone on this page is bred from that plant, not from a reproduction of it.

That distinction matters. Most “Chemdog” seed sold online is feminized recreation, several generations removed from the source. What is here is different: regular seeds from backcrossed Chemdog 91 stock, and rooted clones of the actual mother plants. If you are looking for the line rather than the name, this is the page.

The Line

In 1991 Greg, “Chemdog” bought an ounce of Dogbud at a Grateful Dead show at Deer Creek, Indiana. That meeting was the start of it. They swapped contacts, and more flower was sent to him from Colorado after that. The seeds were found in that lot. What grew from those seeds became Chemdog, and the entire fuel forward family that dominates modern cannabis came off it.

Those thirteen seeds produced sisters, not one plant. Chem 91 and Chem D came out of the same batch and went in completely different directions, Chem 91 skunky and lemon-forward, Chem D rubbery and chemical, heavier in the branch and heavier in the resin.

Skunk VA has held the Chemdog 91 cut since 1995, never renamed, never diluted. Chem D arrived later and by a different route: a 2006 trip to New York and a trade with Greg ‘Chemdog’ for a couple of Chemdog 91 clones. The trip was made for the Chem Sister… what came home was Chem D, and she has been in the garden ever since. Two plants, two separate chains of custody, both unbroken.

These are not recreations or S1 reversals. They are the plants themselves.

What “Bx3” Means

Most of the seed catalog is built on Chemdog 91 Bx3, a third-generation backcross. Each backcross breeds the offspring back to the original Chemdog 91 parent, concentrating the source genetics with every generation. By Bx3 the resulting seeds carry a dominant expression of the original plant while gaining whatever the outcross partner brings. A few lines here work from Bx2 stock instead, and those say so in the name.

In practice a backcross gives you Chemdog structure, Chemdog fuel and Chemdog vigor, with the flavor or color of the partner strain layered over the top. It is why a pack of Chem Cornelian throws purple on a Chemdog frame, and why Chemnesia reads lemon over the same unmistakable gas.

All seed packs are 13 regular seeds, not feminized. Regular seeds mean males, which means you can breed with them and hunt properly.

Why do you spell it Chemdog?

Chemdog is the spelling used here and by the people who have held the line. “Chemdawg” and “Chem” also turn up online, and all three trace back to the same 1991 origin. Chemdog 91 refers specifically to the original 1991 cut rather than the many later selections and recreations sold under the other spellings.

What is the difference between Chemdog 91, Chem D and Chem 4?

They are siblings.. separate plants grown from the original thirteen seeds. Chem D and Chem 4 were selections out of that same group. Each has its own profile, and each is a distinct plant rather than a variation on one.

Are these feminized seeds?

No. All seed packs are 13 regular seeds. Regular seeds produce both males and females, which is what you need in order to breed or to hunt phenotypes properly.

What does Bx3 mean?

Third-generation backcross, the line has been bred back to the original Chemdog 91 parent three times, concentrating the source genetics with each generation.

Why choose a clone over seeds?

A clone is a genetic copy of one specific plant, so you know exactly what you are getting. Seeds give you variation to hunt through. Clones are for growers who want the known selection; seeds are for growers who want to find their own.

Who holds the Chemdog 91 cut

Skunk VA does, and he has since 1995. In his words: “I got this cut in 1995 and I have had it ever since. Same plant. Never renamed, never diluted.”

There are other accounts in circulation. Some place the cut elsewhere. Some say no single person holds it. Lucky Dog Seed Co is not naming anybody and is not disputing what anyone else grows.

The claim made here is narrow and it is the only one being made: the plant taken in 1995 has been run continuously since, and every Chemdog 91 seed and clone sold here comes off it.

How long does Chemdog 91 flower

Flowering time: 63 to 70 days. She is not a fast finisher and she was never meant to be.

Is Chemdog 91 hard to grow

She needs some experience. She is not a beginner plant. Everything in this catalog is built on her, but she is not the one to learn on.

What does Chemdog 91 yield

Average. Skunk VA does not keep this cut for weight. He keeps it for what it is.

What does Chemdog 91 smoke like

Effects are the skunky, lemony side of the Chem family, a clear and functional high rather than a heavy one. The rubbery, chemical funk is her sister Chem D, not her.
